Education/Credentials
Barbara Simpson, a licensed clinical social worker, received her
Master of Social Work degree in 1981 from Tulane University, New Orleans,
Louisiana. She has extensive training and experience in
structural-strategic family therapy as well as solution-focused and cognitive
behavioral treatment approaches. Ms. Simpson is a member of the National
Association of Social Workers as well as the Academy of Certified Social
Workers. She is recognized as a Qualified Clinical Social Worker (QCSW) by
the NASW and as a Board Certified Diplomate in Clinical Social Work by the
National Association of Social Workers and by the American Board of Examiners in
Clinical Social Work. Ms. Simpson is included in the NASW Register of
Clinical Social Workers.
Experience
Upon receiving her social work degree in 1981, Ms. Simpson began
a family therapy program for the Arizona Children's Association in Tucson,
Arizona. This program evolved into the Center of Family Therapy. As
the founder and director of CFT, Ms. Simpson trained and supervised masters and
doctorate level family therapists and presented at state and national
conferences on treatment interventions.
Ms. Simpson served as the clinical director for Hillcrest Family
Services in Dubuque, Iowa and as the executive director for the Florence
Crittenton Programs of South Carolina, Family Guidance Center of Berks County,
Pennsylvania and Blue Ridge Speech and Hearing Center of Loudoun County,
Virginia. While in Iowa, she taught social work classes for Clark College.
Treatment Approaches
Ms. Simpson has over 25 years of experience in providing
individual, marital, group and family therapies. Her practice has included
work with children, adolescents and adults. She has focused on helping
clients to resolve issues with anxiety, depression, emotional distress, physical
and sexual abuse, learning and eating disorders, medical problems and family,
marital and work issues. Ms. Simpson engages in on-going training including,
most recently anxiety treatment, biofeedback and integrative couple therapy.
With clients, Ms. Simpson assists in clarifying motivation for
treatment, developing goals for outcomes and treating solutions for presenting
problems. When indicated, she recommends the inclusion of family members,
significant others and friends in the treatment process.
