Education/Credentials

Mrs. Torres has worked as a licensed psychologist since 1989 and a certified school psychologist since 1981. Her most recent university experience occurred during the 2009-10 school year when she earned 60 credit hours at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine completing the Certificate Series in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. She completed the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Education at Widener University in 2009, and School Psychologist Certification at Millersville University in 1981. At Kutztown University, Mrs. Torres earned a Master of Education in Counseling, and 51 credits in Spanish in the Foreign Language Department. At East Stroudsburg University, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education as well as Elementary Education Certification.

Mrs. Torres continues to expand and improve her skills by attending numerous workshops and conferences on a wide variety of topics in counseling and psychology. She is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Pennsylvania Psychological Association, and the National Association of School Psychologists.

Experience

Mrs. Torres’ experience as a therapist began in 1973 when she was employed by Counseling Services Unit. Subsequently she worked as a therapist for Alpha Counseling & Mediation Center and Innovative Counseling Associates as well as working as a counselor for Daniel Boone School District.

Mrs. Torres’ school psychologist experience includes working in the Berks County Intermediate Unit, the School District of Lancaster, the Reading School District, and completing private evaluations for several districts in Berks, Lancaster, and Lehigh Counties. She also worked as an elementary school teacher and substitute teacher in several school districts in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Mrs. Torres’ clients include children from age 4 to 12, adolescents, young adults, adults, and couples. As a fluent Spanish language speaker, Mrs. Torres provides therapy and assessment services to numerous Spanish speaking students and clients. Her specialties include couples counseling; grief and mourning; suicide; depression; anxiety; play therapy; ADHD; and, Autism/Asperger’s Disorder.

Treatment Approaches

Mrs. Torres believes in the ability of each person to improve the quality of his or her life through participating in a positive, collaborative counseling relationship; learning and practicing new behaviors; and, taking responsibility for change. Her style of treatment draws heavily from cognitive-behavioral ideology as well as client centered and positive psychology approaches. With children she also utilizes play therapy and cognitive behavior techniques incorporated into games and activities.
